STEP relies greatly on grants and donations to provide services to low-income individuals and families.  You can play a vital role to help us ensure that we will continue to provide quality services to more than 3500 clients we serve each year. It is through the generosity of supporters that STEP will continue to make a positive impact on our low-income clients and our community. Our donors truly make the difference.

Ways to Give

  • A donation by cash or check
  • A donation of appreciated stock or property
  • Sponsorship of a special event
  • A gift in memory of someone
  • Planned giving with a bequest, charitable trust, or by naming STEP the beneficiary of an insurance policy

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, contributions to the agency are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.   In addition, some donations will qualify for Virginia state tax credits through the Neighborhood Assistance Program (see below)
You may designate which program receives your donation.  Some of the programs that you may designate your donation to are listed below.

  • STEP’s Homeless Housing Program (support the construction and upkeep of the house.  Also help pay for monthly fees associated with operation of the house).
  • Head Start or Early Head Start (help purchase needed art supplies, diapers, classroom supplies, etc.)
  • Senior Meals Program (support our seniors to ensure hot meals are delivered)
  • Project Discovery Program (help support college field trips or a scholarship)

Planned Giving

Deferred gifts help the agency build a strong foundation for the future.  They may also be more appropriate for individuals who would like to make a significant donation to the agency that may be difficult to give outright.  For more information about planned giving through bequests, charitable gift annuities, or life income gifts, please contact Terry Bridges, Finance Director at 540-483-5142 or terry.bridges@stepincva.com.

Neighborhood Assistance Program Tax Credits

Neighborhood Assistance Program Tax Credits (NAP) emphasizes partnerships between the private and public sector to assist the economically deprived. Eligibility for NAP is limited to nonprofit organizations whose primary function is providing assistance for impoverished people. Several of the activities sponsored under the program include education, job training, housing assistance, health care clinics and community services.

These state tax credits are provided as an incentive for businesses and individuals to contribute directly to an approved nonprofit organization. Business contributions may be in the form of cash, goods, stock, real estate, professional services, contracting services and rent or lease of the participating nonprofits' facilities. Individual contributions are limited to cash or marketable securities. In return for their contributions, businesses and individuals receive credits that may be applied against their state income tax liability.
A business contributing directly to STEP can receive a state tax credit for 40 percent of their total contribution. Tax credits may be available to a business making a donation of at least $1,000 or nor more than $437,500 to an approved NAP organization.

Example:
Minimum - $1,000 donation X .40 = $400 tax credit
Maximum - $437,500 donation X .40 = $175,000 tax credit per tax year

Tax credits may also be available to individuals or married couples donating cash or marketable securities directly to approved NAP organizations. The minimum donation by an individual or a married couple must be at least $500. The value of the tax credit is equal to 40 percent of the donation.
