STEP Businesses

Social entrepreneurship is a growing trend among non-profit organizations.  It can be defined as ventures that achieve its primary social or environmental mission using business methods. Community Action Agencies have long been a leader in the field of social enterprise/entrepreneurship through a vast array of business models.  Community Action Agencies develop affordable housing, manage properties, own restaurants, provide payroll services to small businesses, and make affordable loans to small businesses, etc.

Many nonprofit organizations and Community Action Agencies see social enterprise as a way to reduce their dependence on charitable donations and grants. STEP is among those non-profits who are attempting to increase our “non-grant” income so our agency won’t be as negatively impacted should we lose state, federal, or grant funding.  By diversifying our funding streams, STEP becomes a stronger agency and ensures our clients will continue to receive quality services.

All of STEP’s business models are designed to create jobs, generate income, and create a positive impact on our community and those we serve.  STEP will continue to evaluate opportunities that will meet the above criteria.  Below are our current offerings.

Property Management

STEP purchased the Dent Street Apartment Building in August 2009.  The apartments are located in an ideal location; across the street from STEP’s Central Offices in Rocky Mount.  The building holds 12 units with each unit containing two bedrooms, 1 bath, recently renovated kitchen, and large living room.  An onsite laundry room is available for the residents.  Rent for each unit is priced at $450 per month, which is below market rate.  Each prospective tenant must complete an application and submit to a criminal background and credit examination.  For further information, or to inquire about vacancies, contact STEP Property Management at 540-483-3123.
